After 13 years of building cars in an after-school program at West Philadelphia High’s Auto Academy, the EVX Team is moving its base of operation. On September 6, 2011, The Sustainability Workshop (Workshop) opens at The Navy Yard in South Philadelphia. The Workshop has enrolled 30 Philadelphia public high school seniors for a year-long program that will operate in partnership with Drexel University, the School District of Philadelphia and the Greater Philadelphia Innovation Cluster (GPIC). On Thursday September 16, 2010, I accompanied 4 members of the West Philly Hybrid X Team to the White House. We were in town from the Awards Ceremony of the Progressive Automotive X PRIZE at the same time President Barack Obama was announcing the creation of a new initiative to increase resources for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) education. His initiative is called Change the Equation.Check out the video about our visit.
About the Team
High school students from Philadelphia's inner city, the West Philly Hybrid X Team, are embarking on new adventures after their success in the Progressive Automotive X PRIZE. We are thrilled to announce that Edison2, the X PRIZE winner, has built a chassis of their Very Light Car (VLC) for us to use for our next project, the creation of an all-electric version of their prize winning car.
Edison2 won the Mainstream Division of the X PRIZE with this super aerodynamic car which was powered by a one cylinder internal combustion engine for the competition. Time Magazine named the VLC as one the 50 best inventions of 2010.
The EVX Team has designed an all-electric drive train to power the Very Light Car. We will be showcasing our work in the Spirit of Innovation Awards and at the Green Grand Prix this spring. Building on Edison2’s ground-breaking engineering, the EVX Team will create the most efficient electric car on the market.
